While travelling, at hotel lobbies, airports, or cafes you’ll likely want to connect to free wi-fi, but if the network is unsecured, your data (including login credentials, payment info, or remote-access connections) can be intercepted.

In 2024, the Australian Federal Police charged a 42-year-old man suspected of creating fake wifi access points at airports and on domestic flights. Passengers who connected were taken to a login page asking for their personal information.
